Finger Lickin’ Good: Norfolk/Virginia Beach, VA

If you thought Washington, DC had good food, wait until you see this! Norfolk and Virginia Beach may just have the best food in town. With a mix of southern style home cooking to sweet and bubbly sorbet mimosas, these places will leave your mouth watering.

Citrus
357 N Great Neck Rd Virginia Beach, VA 23454 | http://m.citrusvb.com

Perfect spot for breakfast or brunch, Citrus is a great place to eat before hitting the shore.

What’s on our menu:

Croissant French Toast – 11.99
Four pieces sprinkled with powdered sugar served with 2 farm eggs any style, choice of 2 bacon strips, 2 sausage patties or 2 sausage links & hash brown or grits

Ginger K – $8
Passion fruit rum, champagne, orange & cranberry juice, grenadine

Tropical Mimosa – $5
Champagne & passion fruit orange guava juice

Dig in?

YES – It was nice being able to order a drink at the bar while we waited for our table. It took us roughly 30 minutes to get a table outside. The staff are SUPER friendly. All the staff made sure that everyone had water and their plates cleared off – Even the little pups got their bowls refilled.

The Croissant French Toast was delicious. It had that same warm buttery flavor as any french bakery. The hint of passion fruit in the Ginger K  Mimosa took me back to the islands – Very refreshing.

Handsome Biscut

2511 Colonial Ave Norfolk, VA 23517 | handsomebiscuit.com

By far the cutest breakfast shop, Handsome Biscuit wins my vote for it’s southern charm. Great service and tasteful bites.

What’s on or menu:

Hella Fitzgerald – $7.25
Fried hockey with bacon, cheddar, and red eye sausage gravy

Bleu Blazer – $6.75
Fried Chicken with Spicy Pickled Red Cabbage and Blue Cheese dressing

Ice Tea – $1.85
Refreshing ice tea with a hint of lemon and lime

Homemade Hot Sauce – $.50

Dig in?

YES – The Hella Fitzgerald was such an acquired taste. My first southern style biscuit and gravy dish and it was delicious. Good mix of flavors and filling. The Bleu Blazer was a great mix up flavor. The blue cheese wasn’t as pungent as it typically is which allowed other flavors to mix in. The Ice Tea was a great touch to a hot summer morning to quench my thirst.  I would’ve skipped out on the hot sauce if I knew I had to pay because 9/10 it isn’t spicy enough for me. It also tasted a little too seasoned.

Little dog dinner
1917 Colley Ave., Norfolk, VA 20171 | littledogdiner.com

Little Dog Diner offers good old-fashioned home cooking in a charming, retro atmosphere! Cute little indoor and outdoor setting with a tree growing right through it. Don’t get me started on the sorbet mimosas *mouth watering*!

What’s on our menu:

French Toast and Eggs Platter – $9.99
Choice of cranberry walnut Artisan bread, Challah Bread or Crunchy Texas Toast, dredged in egg wash, then fried to a golden brown served with 2 eggs your way and a side of maple bourbon butter sauce. Choice of scrapple, bacon, sausage, or ham.

Raspberry Sorbet Mimosas  – $5.75
Chilled champagne served over your choice of one of our fruity sorbets – surprisingly delicious

Dig in?

YES – The food is like your typical breakfast diner, simple yet delicious. But to be honest, the Sorbet Mimosas is the main reason I come. My sister and I fight over this all the time but the raspberry wins over the mango flavor, hands down. With the right pour of champagne, this mimosa has to be one of my top 5.

I always go for the Challah French Toast, it adds an extra flavor to your traditional french toast. You’ll leave feeling satisfied.

What’s on our menu:

Great for sharing! A warm blend of lump crabmeat, cream cheese, herbs and spices. Served with tri-colored tortilla chips.

Bacon Wrapped Sea Scallops – $10.99
Served with micro greens and pineapple-tomato salsa, and drizzled with orange chipotle sauce.

Surfside Fish Tacos – $11.99
Two soft tacos filled with crunchy cabbage, cilantro and your choice of blackened tuna or fried fish, drizzled with Sriracha aioli. Served with chilled black bean and rice salad and pineapple-tomato salsa.

Virginia’s Original Orange Crush – $6.73
Fresh-squeezed, sure-to-please goodness made from orange juice, orange vodka, triple sec and Sprite.

Dig in?

YES – I’m not the biggest fan of scallops, but the kick of flavor in the Bacon Wrapped Sea Scallops dish blew my mind. Probably the only scallops I will eat is at Waterman’s. My first Crab Dip and boy did it have me stuffing my face. Great flavor and spices. The Fish Tacos could’ve been crispier, however, it is still a great option if you’re looking to eat seafood. The Orange Crush was a slight disappointment. Mine kind of tasted watered down with no intention of getting me buzzed. What’s up with that? It still quenched my thirst but I will definitely be trying something new.

I definitely recommend at least one of these dishes as a starter.

What’s on our menu:

Chicken and Waffle – $9
One Southern fried chicken breast, on a red velvet waffle, with maple cream cheese and candied pecans

Buttermilk Biscut and Country Sausage Gravy  – $9
With two eggs any style and potato hash

Coffee Crush – $8.50
Belle isle cold brew coffee moonshine, fee brothers black walnut bitters, honey syrup, half and half

Dig in?

YES – Hands down the best Chicken and Waffles I’ve ever had, and I’ve had a few. You have the taste of the sweet glaze, the toasted candied pecans mixed with a warm crispy chicken and fluffy red velvet waffle. I mean COME ON! My mouth is getting watery just writing about it! My sister shared that the Buttermilk Biscut and Country Sausage Gravy was good but she’s had better. It wasn’t my type of taste. The Coffee Crush lacked alcohol but it was still a refreshing iced coffee drink.

BAD ASS COFFEE
619 18th Street Virginia Beach VA 23451 | www.badasscoffee.com

The name speaks for itself, BAD ASS COFFEE and a warm cozy setting. This is the coffee shop you need on your radar. Great hang out spot and less stuffy than any Starbucks I’ve ever been to (sorry!).

What’s on our menu:

Caramel Iced Coffee – $3.57

Orange Poppyseed Bread  – $2.87

Dig in?

YES – Super cute, beach style coffee shop. The staff were so sweet and even had a friendly conversation with us while our drinks were being made. The Orange Poppyseed Bread was perfectly moist, sweetened, and went deliciously well with the iced coffee. The Iced Coffee was the perfect blend of coffee and caramel – not too sweet but strong enough to get to moving.

I’d choose Bad Ass over Starbucks any day!

Benny’s

What’s on our menu:

Pepperoni Pizza – $5

Dig In?

YES – Open 11am – 2am, Benny’s is the best anytime, day or night… but I’ll have to admit, it tastes ah-mazing when you’ve had a couple drinks. This Jumbo Slice will fill your satisfaction and stomach.
